Cybercriminals are constantly innovating new ways to scam individuals. Protect yourself by following these key precautions:
Common Scams and How to Respond
- TRAI Call Threats: If someone calls claiming TRAI will disconnect your phone, ignore it. It’s a scam.
- Fake FedEx Calls: Calls about a package asking you to press any key are fraudulent. Do not respond.
- Fake Police Calls: If someone claiming to be a police officer calls regarding your Aadhaar or says you are under digital arrest, its a scam. Ignore them.
- Drug Package Scams: Allegations about drugs in a package linked to you are fake. Do not engage.
- Silence Requests: If they tell you not to inform anyone, it’s a red flag. Report to Cyber Crime Police at 1930
- WhatsApp/SMS Scams: Messages or calls via WhatsApp or SMS from unknown numbers asking for details are scams.
- UPI Fraud: If someone claims they mistakenly sent money to your UPI ID and requests a refund, ignore them.
- Fake Buyers (Army/CRPF): Fraudsters claiming to be from the army or CRPF and showing fake IDs are trying to scam you.
- Food Delivery Apps: Calls claiming to be from Swiggy or Zomato asking for address confirmation or OTPs are scams.
- OTP Fraud: Never share OTPs for any reason, including to cancel orders or rides.
- Video Calls: Avoid answering calls in video mode from unknown numbers.
Digital Hygiene Practices
- Do Not Click Unknown Links: Never open links in blue text or from suspicious messages.
- Verify Official Notices: If you receive notices from Police, CBI, ED, or IT Department, verify them offline through authorized government portals.
- Guard Personal Information: Never share your address, location, Aadhaar, PAN, date of birth, or other personal details over calls or messages.
- Refuse to Confirm Information: If someone asks you to confirm your name or details, refuse. If they called you, they should already have the information. Simply hang up.
If Pressured or Threatened
- Cybercriminals often intimidate or create urgency to force you into responding.
- Best Practice: Hang up, note the number, and block it immediately.
For Bank Transactions
- Avoid using smartphones for banking. Consider using a basic keypad phone for added security.
If You Fall Victim
- Do not hesitate to report the incident to your local Cyber Police, even if you feel embarrassed. Fraudsters exploit hesitation and fear of reputation damage.
